On a recent morning, I headed out to a kundalini yoga class, looking forward to the renewed energy and fresh perspective I would likely have after the class. But when I arrived at the studio, the teacher wasn't there and after a few minutes, we learned she would not be showing up.
There were 4 of us who had planned to attend the class and I suggested that we take a leap and together, piece together a class. Three of us were up to the challenge so we got settled into the room.
In kundalini yoga, a group class typically includes: warm up movements and then specific "kriya's" or postures, breaths and movements that are done for a set period of time and for a specific purpose. Most classes are usually accompanied by music and there is a wonderful selection of kundalini music available. www.spiritvoyage.com
It turned out that for us, 3 was the magic number that morning and each one of us added something valuable. The woman who sat to my right, did a fantastic job of guiding us through the warm up exercises. It was then time to move on to the kriya's and the woman to my left asked if we wanted her to keep track of the time. Perfect!
I have kundalini music recorded on my phone so I checked in with my fellow yogi's and asked if they wanted me to play the songs to accompany us and they happily said yes.
So there we were. Three women who assumed we would be lead by a teacher that morning, who then discovered that together, we could guide each other and be our own teachers. And guess what? We all felt great!
Not only did we benefit from the kundalini postures and breathing exercises but we were empowered because we had been our own teachers!
As we chatted after class before saying goodbye, we exchanged numbers and planned to see each other again. We had accomplished something together and learned to believe in ourselves just a little bit more.
Every kundalini class that I have ever attended, concludes with this beautiful song that I wanted to share with you:
"May the long time sun shine upon you, all love surround you and the pure light within, guide your way on."
